I certainly can't speak for all cultures or all societies but it's clear that in America poetry serves a very marginal purpose. It's not part of the cultural mainstream.

I write poetry in order to live more fully.
When you retire it's a place in life a part of the journey. You just don't quit work you develop an attitude where you can do what you please.
