When Demetrie got sick we knew it was our responsibility to take care of her and pay her medical bills. And we embraced that. But the tricky part is like so many families in the South we also expected her to use a separate bathroom to use separate utensils.
For example I was a White House intern the summer before I dropped out of law school. Everybody knew about it. I'd come home and go to church and everybody would say 'Oh my God. Demetri you're working at the White House.'
What makes America amazing is that there have always been men and women of courage who were willing to think more about the future of their children and grandchildren than they did about their own political careers.
