History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid.

In the long history of the world only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. I do not shrink from this responsibility - I welcome it.

Any story about revenge is ultimately a story about forgiveness redemption or the futility of revenge.

If Jesus Christ was who He claimed to be and He did die on a cross at a point of time in history then for all history past and all history future it is relevant because that is the very focal point for forgiveness and redemption.

Maybe we've been brainwashed by 130 years of Yankee history but Southern identity now has more to do with food accents manners music than the Confederate past. It's something that's open to both races a variety of ethnic groups and people who move here.

America is becoming more and more dependent upon imports from foreign manufacturers than we are exports from our country in all fields: in appliances in clothing even food. This year America may become for the first time in its history a net food importer.

At home I serve the kind of food I know the story behind.

As a freelance writer I'd be asked to become an expert for various magazines on any subject whether food or wine or history or the life span of veterinarians. I was completely unschooled in any of these things.

I was born in the '60s and grew up in the '70s - not exactly the best decade for food in British history. It was horrendous. It was a time when as a nation we excelled in art and music and acting and photography and fashion - all creative skills... all apart from cooking.

It's all about who's where on the food chain. When I'm the story editor I expect my writers to follow my vision. When I'm working for another editor I'm obliged to follow their vision.

If somebody has a chance to put my food in their mouth that tells the story.

The kitchen's a laboratory and everything that happens there has to do with science. It's biology chemistry physics. Yes there's history. Yes there's artistry. Yes to all of that. But what happened there what actually happens to the food is all science.

I love places that have an incredible history. I love the Italian way of life. I love the food. I love the people. I love the attitudes of Italians.

President Obama is the most successful food stamp president in American history. I would like to be the most successful paycheck president in American history.

For whatever reason maybe it's because of my story but people associate Livestrong with exercise and physical fitness health and lifestyle choices like that.

People just want to hear some common sense... and I bring to bear the experience in local government and state government and national government - I was the first woman in history on the Senate Finance Committee - not to mention the diplomatic international experience.

How are fears born? They are born because of differences in tradition and history they are born because of differences in emotional political and national circumstances. Because of such differences people fear they cannot live together.

I fear dying in the middle of a book. It would be so annoying to write 80 000 words and not get to the end. I'm phobic about it. So when I'm writing a book I leave messages all over the house for people to know how the story ends and then someone can finish it for me.

The vehemence with which certain critics have chosen not simply to criticize what I've written but to challenge my writing this story at all speaks of what the book is about: fear of disapproval.

Uncertainty and fear and ignorance about immigrants about people who are different has a history as old as our Nation.

You always fear when you're making a movie that has a moral to the story that people are going to reject the idea of being taught a lesson.

Whenever somebody says they need an angle for their story I always fear that they've got an idea and they want me to fit into it or they want me to come up with an idea myself or I'm supposed to be more revealing than I've been and to me it just sounds like something I don't want to do.

Isn't history ultimately the result of our fear of boredom?

I got out of autobiography because my story is I was famous it was hard for me I got into therapy. I had trouble with food I got a nutritionist. There's no story there.
