Time is nature's way of keeping everything from happening at once.

Nothing happens to any man that he is not formed by nature to bear.

The sun the moon and the stars would have disappeared long ago... had they happened to be within the reach of predatory human hands.

I want to promote poetry to the point where you got all the baldhead kids running around doing poetry getting the music out of the way and having only words the spoken word and then see what happens.

Maybe someday you can accuse somebody of being a poseur by selling out and playing blues music but that's just not going to happen in my lifetime.

So there's no guarantee if you like the music you will empathize with the culture and the people who made it. It doesn't necessarily happen. I think it can but it doesn't necessarily happen. Which is kind of a shame.

It was all about music about getting your friends to come and see you play. I don't see that same intimacy happening very much today.

I've seen country music go uptown like we say and I'm proud I was there when it happened.

City people live the city. We live in L.A. New York we live in places where it's chaotic and you never know what's gonna happen. And that's the music - you never know what's gonna happen.

I would love to continue in music with writing... but I am not the kind of person who will hang around if I start to become irrelevant. The absolute transformation of everything that we ever thought about music will take place within 10 years and nothing is going to be able to stop it. I see absolutely no point in pretending that it's not going to happen. I'm fully confident that copyright for instance will no longer exist in 10 years.

Music itself is going to become like running water or electricity. So it's like just take advantage of these last few years because none of this is ever going to happen again. We have a very wide range of content but the brand-newest movies what's happening with those is a $30 pay-per-view option - not from Netflix but from DirecTV and others - of movies that are in the theater.

I don't think Hollywood was trying to do anything with me. In fact they lost interest pretty quick. I think I got lucky briefly in the '90s and it just so happened that those movies were the opportunities that came my way. Then it just kind of stopped.

The first two movies I directed failed when I was 21 and 23 and that was the greatest thing that could have happened.

I don't know what has happened to movies but lately every movie is at least 20 minutes too long. It used to be that if you were three hours long it was because it was epic - a movie about Gandhi something with very important subject matters.

Some movies bring out the creativity in you. Every single audience member can become creative in the face of a particular movie. If you happen to like my films it's because my films provide a bed for you on which you can find your creativity. The Hollywood movies do not provide that for you.

Even though I make those movies I find myself wishing that more of those magic moments could happen in real life.

With the CGI suddenly there's a thousand enemies instead of six - the army goes off into the horizon. You don't need that. The audience loses its relationship with the threat on the screen. That's something that's consistently happening and it makes these movies like video games and that's a soulless enterprise. It's all kinetics without emotion.

The nature of the movies is different than it was five years ago and they're all driven by the possibilities of CGI which means you can make anything happen on screen that you can possibly desire.
